Follow the tips in this handbook and you’ll be helping to keep yourself, your peers and University information safe.
\r\nInformation security helps us to do what we do best – teaching and research. It’s simple and mostly common sense.
\r\nMake sure you let your family and friends know what to do too, so they’re safe online.
\r\nDon’t respond to emails or phone calls requesting confidential University information – including staff and student details, confidential research data or corporate information.
\r\nIt’s easy for an unauthorised person to call us and pretend to be an employee or a concerned parent.
\r\nStay on guard to avoid falling for this scam and report any suspicious activity through ServiceLine. Protect your personal information just as closely.
\r\nAlways report any suspicious activity through ServiceLine. Part of our job is to stop cyber-attacks and to make sure our data isn’t lost or stolen.
\r\nAll of our work at the University depends on keeping our information safe. When something goes wrong, the faster we know about it, the faster we can deal with it.
\r\nDon’t leave printouts containing confidential information on your desk. Lock them in a drawer or shred them.
\r\nKeep your desk tidy and documents locked away. It makes the office look more organised and reduces the risk of information leaks.
\r\nAlways lock your computer and mobile phone when you’re not using them. You work on important things, and we want to make sure that they stay safe and secure.
\r\nLocking your phone and computer keeps your data and contacts safe from prying eyes. If you’re working in a student public workstation area, always remember to log off before you leave the computer.
\r\nIf you have a smartphone, you should also make sure you enable Find my iPhone (Apple) or Device Manager (Android) to help you find it or erase it remotely if lost. For other makes of ‘phone, please check with your provider
\r\nWhen you access sensitive information from an insecure computer, like a shared machine at home, you put the information you’re viewing at risk.
\r\nMake sure your computer is running the latest approved security patches, antivirus and firewall software. You should use user mode, not administrator mode, whenever possible to help prevent some malicious software from working.
\r\nAlways password-protect sensitive files on your computer, USB and smartphones.
\r\nLosing items like phones, USB flash drives and laptops can happen to anyone.
\r\nEncrypting your devices and protecting them with strong passwords means you make it more difficult for someone to steal your confidential data, whether it’s your personal contacts and text messages or your latest research breakthrough.
\r\nDon’t use obvious passwords, like “password”, “cat”, or obvious character sequences like “asdfg” and “12345”. It’s best to use the longest password you can remember. Adding complexity with numbers and punctuation also helps to make the password difficult\r\n to discover.
\r\nYou should use different passwords for different websites and services. If one site is hacked, your other accounts won’t be compromised.
\r\nAlways delete suspicious emails and links. Even opening or viewing these emails and links can compromise your computer and create unwanted problems for you and others without your knowledge.
\r\nIf something looks too good to be true, it probably is.
\r\nHave you found a USB drive on the floor? Be careful, as it may contain malicious software.
\r\nThese devices and even the documents stored on them can be compromised with code waiting to launch as soon as you plug them into a computer.
\r\nIf you’re in doubt, speak to ServiceLine for assistance.
\r\nMalicious applications often pose as legitimate programs, like games, tools or even antivirus software.
\r\nThis is the main reason of our PCs becoming infected with viruses and other malicious software. If you need an application for your work, let ServiceLine know and they’ll make sure it’s safe to use before installing it.
\r\nKeeping our information secure is an ongoing effort.
\r\nIt’s not clear where future threats will come from or what they’ll look like. You can be better prepared by using the tips in this guide, and above all using common sense to keep safe when using your computers and phones.

ESD is an approach to developing people’s knowledge, skills and values in order to shape a more sustainable\r\n future. It goes beyond teaching about sustainability concepts, to enabling individuals to become globally responsible citizens with the skills to shape a sustainable future.
\r\n\r\n The Sustainability Action Programme is mapping the teaching of sustainability in all the undergraduate and postgraduate taught degrees at the University. The goal is to celebrate where sustainability is already embedded within the curriculum and support\r\n further opportunities to develop our ESD. Find out how this relates to your study or work by following the links for students and staff.
\r\n\r\n Students are also saying that they want this learning. For the last three years, the Higher Education Academy and the National Union of Students have published research on current student attitudes to sustainability at university. This research consistently\r\n demonstrated that over 80% of students believe that sustainability should be covered by their university. Education must prepare future leaders and citizens. In the face of global environmental, social and economic challenges, graduates of the University\r\n of Southampton must be equipped to create solutions for a better, more sustainable future.

\r\n\r\n The University has set an ambitious target to reduce our carbon emissions by 20% by 2020 (against 2005/6 levels). A strategic carbon management plan has been developed to achieve this.
\r\n\r\n The University has £1million each year up to 2014/15 to spend on carbon reduction projects. These fund technical and behaviour change projects to reduce the carbon impact of the University community and to deliver the associated financial savings.
\r\n\r\n Every one has a role to play in the University achieving its carbon management targets. You can follow our top advice on how to reduce carbon in your daily life. For your own safety please insure that you are visible (especially when riding in the dark).
Reflective snap bands, bag covers, LED lights, helmets and locks are available in the Unilink Office and the SU shop in Building 57.
The University works closely with the Police to both inform cyclists of the need to secure their bike and deter would-be thieves from operating on our campuses. It is advisable that cyclists use the University's cycle stores and only use 'D Type' locks for security (these can be purchased at a discounted rate at the Uni-link Office).

As demand for car parking permits outstrips supply. No one may park on site without displaying a valid\r\n permit unless they are visitors who can be booked into the Visitors’ Car Park at Highfield. Student parking at academic sites is normally limited to those with medical needs.
\r\n Permits are not required for motor cycles or scooters but they must not be parked in designated car parking spaces.
\r\n Full details of the terms and conditions for parking are listed here.University Calendar
\r\n There is a 100 space Pay and Display Car Park at Highfield for use by visitors, staff and students. Customers should be aware that it fills up early during term time and space is on a first come first served basis.
\r\n\r\n The car park is sited in the vicinity of Buildings 1 and 6 (links)
\r\n\r\n The pay and display machines accept coins, chip and pin and contactless card payment.
\r\n\r\n Parking for disabled blue badge holders is free of Charge.
\r\n\r\n Disabled bays on the academic campuses are provided where they are needed by staff and students and evening patrons of the Turner Sims Concert Hall, the Nuffield Theatre and the John Hansard Gallery. If staff or students who are disabled permit holders\r\n find they are having issues parking close to a particular building we are happy to assist by reserving additional bays if required.
\r\n\r\n Staff and students who are blue badge holders are issued with free permits to park on academic campuses and halls of residence. Disabled blue badge holders are welcome to park in any available bay on campus as long as they display a valid blue badge.
\r\n\r\n Staff and student parking permit holders who have medical reasons for requiring a disabled bay, but are not disabled blue badge holders, should provide evidence of their health problems. This does not necessitate a letter from a doctor as a clinic appointment\r\n letter or similar document may be sufficient. The appropriate permit fee will be charged. Students who are known by the Enabling Services team or staff who have been referred to Occupational Health may get these University teams to support their\r\n need for access to disabled parking.University of Southampton Enabling Services
\r\n\r\n There are disabled bays located in the Visitors’ Car Park at Highfield and close to the buildings at Avenue, the National Oceanography Centre Southampton and the Winchester School of Art. Where a visitor requires to park in a particular location, a signed\r\n bay can be arranged.
\r\n\r\n Vehicles parked in breach of the regulations will attract Penalty Charge Notices (PCN). Appeals will be considered only where there are extenuating circumstances or facts are materially incorrect. Appeals must be in writing or by email to the parking\r\n officewith a copy of the PCN included. A reply will be sent to the appellant. It is regretted that no discussions will be entered into over the telephone. Early payment of a PCN will attract a £25 discount. Payment of PCNs should be made via the online\r\n store.

\r\n\r\n All cycles left in cycle cages must display a valid tag which runs from 1 September to 31 August each year
\r\n\r\n Cycles or locks left for longer than 48 hours during any one time on non-halls sites may be deemed as abandoned and may be removed and recycled
\r\n\r\n Cycles or locks considered to be abandoned may receive a fixed notice and may be removed within 7 days
\r\n\r\n Cycles or locks may be removed within 6 hours if thought to be positioned inconsiderately or inappropriately
\r\n\r\n Cycles that have been removed will be stored for 1 month. Owners wishing to claim their cycle back during this period should contact unicycle, a fee of £30 may be charged for each bike released
\r\n\r\n unicycle
\r\n\r\n Cycles remaining unclaimed after 1 month will be placed into the Unicycle scheme and the cycle might be recycled or destroyed

Look out for our Student ambassadors when you arrive at all of our campuses; they’ll be in brightly coloured T-shirts and will be happy to lend you a hand. They are all current students at the University, so chatting to them is also a great way to find out what it’s like to live and study here.
We will email your ticket to you a week before the event. You will need to print this out and bring it with you on the day. If you do not have printing facilities, don’t worry: we can scan your ticket via your smartphone.
When you arrive, please head to one of our check-in locations to get your ticket scanned. This lets us know that you have attended the Open Day. You can also check in via the app. Just select the Check in tile on the home page – all you need is your unique booking number.
To ensure you make the most of your day, use the timetable and maps to ensure you get to attend all of the events that you want to. We have shown in the programme which subject areas are based on each of our campuses, so make sure you know which campuses you’ll need to visit, and plan time to travel between them before you arrive.
As well as picking up a hard copy of the Open Day programme, you can use the app to create your own schedule of the day. Simply click on Programme of the day on the homepage and you will be able to add talks, tours and drop-ins to your own schedule. Then, when you click on My schedule on the homepage, you’ll see your own personalised programme!
Make sure you head to our Information Fair in Jubilee Sports Centre, Building 18. Here you will find an array of information stands, with people ready to answer questions about your preferred subject area, general admissions, accommodation, studying abroad and careers. For full details of stands located here, please select the event in the Programme of the day.
With so much to see, it will be a busy day – but try to leave enough time to sit back with a drink or a bite to eat so you can soak up the Open Day atmosphere. We have a wide variety of restaurants and cafés open at various times between 08:00 and 17:00 on Highfield Campus, Avenue Campus, the Boldrewood Innovation Campus and the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS). Find out about the places to eat where you can stop to refuel.

You can use the Open Day shuttle buses or the regular Unilink service for free during the Open Day, between 08:00 – 18:00. You will need to show the driver the hard copy of your Open Day Programme, the bus pass on the Open Day app or your Open Day ticket.
You can collect an Open Day Programme when you arrive either at Wide Lane Sports Ground, Westquay Shopping Centre (if arriving by car), Southampton Central and Southampton Airport Parkway train stations, or at one of our campuses.
You will receive a copy of your Open Day ticket via email about one week before the event. This ticket also covers any guests you are bringing with you for free travel on the shuttle bus service. You will need to print your ticket out and bring it with you on the day. If you do not have printing facilities do not worry; we can scan your ticket via your smartphone.
