We use lots of acronyms in emails and meetings and they can get confusing. Use the jargon dictionary to help decode your colleagues!

The Dictionary

The terms are not always the official or correct terms, but rather those that are actually used.

ABW: Agresso Business World
AD: Active Directory
Microsoft directory service (replaced Windows NT domains) - primary AD in the University is called SOTON.
AHRC: Arts and Humanities Research Council
AOB: Any Other Business
An opportunity at the end of an agenda to bring up items which were not in the agenda. Generally use this only for important items as everyone wants to escape the meeting!
API: Application Programming Interface
A set of routines, protocols and tools for building software applications.
ARS: Action Request System
Platform containing ESS, CATS booking etc. (accessed via BMC Remedy)
ASRP: Admin Systems Replacement Programme (archaic)
Succeeded by ASRP. Collection of large scale IT based projects to replace ageing administrative systems within the University e.g. replacing Prophecy with Agresso
AVBS: Audio-Visual Booking Service
Service that iSolutions provide upon requests directed to serviceline for all audio visual equipment and support requests.
Agresso: Agresso
Software/Service used for the university finance system.
AppV: Application Virtualisation
virtual software delivery mechanism
Asset tag: a.k.a. UOS number
The University's unique reference number for workstations and laptops. Usually printed on a label, placed on the base-unit of workstations, or lid of laptops. Starts with UOS- or ISS-. Can also be found by looking at the 'Computer Name' property.
BAU: Business as Usual
BBSRC: Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council
BDMS: Banner Document Management System
System used for scanning and storage of student admissions documents.
BRM: Business Relationship Manager
iSolutions staff member who connects between a faculty staff and iSolutions
BSB: Business Systems Board
Banner: Banner
Database used to store student and courses related data & some of the interfaces to that data.
CAA: Computer-assisted Assessment
General term for the use of computers to deliver and/or mark tests, Also known as e-Assessment. Closely linked to CBE (Computer-based Assessment, qv)
CAB: Change Advisory Board
(part of ITIL), the group to which non-minor change requests are submitted, and (hopefully) approved by.
CATS: Coaching and Training Services
Provide deskside coaching, training materials etc.
CBE: Computer-based Examinations
General term for the use of computers to deliver and/or mark credit-bearing summative tests such as Examinations, Also known as 'On-screen Assessment'. Confusingly, can also be known as e-Assessment. Closely linked to CBE (Computer-based Assessment, qv)
CBT: Computer-based Test
CIP: Curriculum Innovation Programme
CLS: Common Learning Spaces
Lecture Theatres and similar spaces.
CMS: Content Management System
The University uses SitePublisher (previously: TeamSite) as its primary content management system - this 'runs' the University corporate web site (support by Web Apps team and University Comms)
COO: Chief Operating Officer OR Campus Operating Officer
COP: Close of Play
Slang expression meaning the end of the working day.
COTS: Commercial Off-The-Shelf
CPD: Continuing Professional Development
Short courses taken by staff.
CRM: Customer Relationship Management
At the University, generally refers to the (retiring) Oracle CRM system.
CTI: Configuration Type Item
Element of the Configuration Database.
CTU: Central Timetabling Unit or Clinical Trials Unit
prime users of S+ to manage University timetabling or a UKCRC registered CTU with expertise in the design, conduct and analysis of multicentre interventional clinical trials.
DDA: Disability Discrimination Act
Defines legal requirements for access to services (including accessibility of software and websites). Superseded by the Equality Act 2010, but most of the requirements are still in place.
DMS: Document Management System
The University uses WorkSite as it's primary document management system (supported by Web Apps team)
DPA: The Data Protection Act
The key set of laws governing the use and storage of data. Especially data about people. Even more especially personal data about people (race, medical history etc).
DSE: Display Screen Equipment
DSO: Department Safety Officer
The person responsible for Health and Safety.
DST: Desktop Solutions Team (archaic)
Develop UDE and other workstation configurations. Now replaced with ESS/ESM
ECS: School of Electronics and Computer Science
Probably now better titled an "Organisational Unit" as the schools are gone.
EPSRC: Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council
EPrints: EPrints Repository Software
Software developed by ECS to put university research papers online. Used by Southampton and many other universities. Software homepage is http://eprints.org/ (there are over 25 installs around soton.ac.uk running used by projects and services)

Job family containing academic and research staff
ESD: Enterprise Systems Development
iSolutions team for server, storage, network and desktop architecture, the new name for "ESS".

Deprecated term, now called "HOFF". Introduced at the end of 2010 as part of the 'transition'. The FFM is part of the faculty leadership team, with responsibility for financial matters.
FOO: Faculty Operating Officer (archaic)
Deprecated term. Now called HOFO. Introduced at the end of 2010 as part of the 'transition'. The FOO is the senior non-academic administrator for a faculty.
FOS: Faculty Operating Service
FPAS: Faculty of Physical and Applied Sciences

GPo: Group Policy
Sometimes just GP. Method of delivering software and settings to users and desktops
GroupSite: GroupSite
The University's term for SharePoint. Used for intranet pages, document store, collaboration, etc.
HEFCE: Higher Education Funding Council for England
HESA: Higher Education Statistics Agency
The official agency for the collection, analysis and dissemination of quantitative information about higher education. UK higher education institutions are required to return data to HESA on a regular basis.
HOFF: Head of Faculty Finance
The person in charge of finance for a faculty. Previously known as FFM.
HOFO: Head of Faculty Operations
The new name for FOOs.
IDM: Identity Management
Replacement for MUD (Massive User Database).
ILIaD: Institute for Learning Innovation and Development
Professional Service that promotes and supports educational innovation, learning technologies, media creation and staff development. It also facilitates a Community of Practice and associated Special Interest Groups.
IRT: Incident Response Team
Aim to resolve incidents that could not be resolved by serviceline
ISB: iSolutions Systems Board
ISS: Information Systems Services (archaic)
former name for iSolutions
ISVR: Institute of Sound and Vibration Research
ITIL: Information Technology Infrastructure Library
A framework for quality IT provision, used by iSolutions
ITSM: Information Technology System Management
A set of tools for managing IT processes such as Incident Management, Request Management, Change Management, Project Management.
JANET: Joint Academic NETwork
Provides network connectivity between academic institutions in the UK (and from them to the Internet)
JES: Joint Electronic Submission
Central system for the electronic submission of research grants to member bodies - mainly UK Research Councils
JISC: Joint Information Systems Committee, Committee of HEFCE
UK group which funds some projects. Funds development & systems projects, not research.
LASS: Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences (archaic)
LATEU: Learning and Teaching Enhancement Unit (archaic)
(note not part of iSolutions), responsible for exploration, development and training for software, hardware and other technology related areas to enhance teaching provision within the University
LDAP: Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
an internet protocol which supports access to directory services. Specifically used in the University for providing information about people, telephone numbers, office location, Faculty, Professional service, institutional affiliation in general.
LENSE: Learning Network South East
MDE: Managed Desktop Environment (archaic)
Former name for UDE
MEDIS: MEDical Information Systems
Catch all term for Support, filestore and web services operated by staff based in South Block SGH. Commonly used to refer to support staff at SGH or the School of Medicine web site. Has an email to support staff medis@soton.ac.uk
MFD: Multi Function Device
Printer, Scanner, Photocopier all in one. Most of the managed print devices in the Uni are MFD now.

MICS: Management Information Computing Services (archaic)

MLE: Managed Learning Environment
The University uses Blackboard as its primary MLE (although several other MLE or VLE solutions are in use). Alternatively refers to the Managed Learning Environment team in iSolutions (who primarily look after Blackboard)
MRC: Medical Research Council
MSA: Management, Specialist and Administrative
Job family containing admin and related staff.

POAS: Post Qualifying Online Admissions System
POAS is the schools student records system for post qualifying students on CPD courses. Post qualifying students have all aspects of their courses managed through POAS until such a point that they have accrued enough points to put towards an award, at which point they will be added to Banner.
POC: Proof of Concept
POG: Process Owners Group
POMBS: Post Qualifying Online Module Booking System
POMBS is a primarily external facing system that is used by NHS Trust staff to manage contracts purchased with the School of Health Sciences. The system allows users to view the current status of their contracts and 'release' them in to a pool if they're going to be unused so that they can be 'picked up' by another trust.
PRINCE2: Projects In Controlled Environments
PRINCE2 is a method for managing projects. It is used by iSolutions on most projects.
RAE: Research Assessment Exercise (archaic)
National scheme for assessing research in UK universities. Last run in 2008, and is to be replaced by the REF.
RAG: Red-Amber-Green
Simple traffic light status used by iSolutions to track the current status of a project.
REF: Research Excellence Framework
Replacement scheme for the RAE, to assess the quality of research in UK higher education institutions.
RFC: Request For Change
A formal document listing the reasons and process for a change to be made to existing systems/services. Do not confuse with "Request for Comment" which are an entirely different thing.

Scrum: Scrum
Scrum is a project management methodology. A type of 'Agile' approach. It is intended to get the best result in the available time and resources. iSolutions are piloting its use on some projects.
ServiceLine: ServiceLine
ServiceLine is the central help-line or call centre and answers queries from all users of IT facilities. Therefore, whatever your problem or query you have the convenience of one point of contact.
Shibboleth: Authentication & Authorisation system
computer security system to enable authentication and authorisation for access to systems, using a unique, non-reusable username and password associated with each individual within the University
TELL: Southampton Learning Environment
New name for SLE. Project to create a joined-up set of systems for teaching & learning. I can't remember off the top of my head what TELL stands for.
