A SOUTHAMPTON SUMMER NIGHT
Wednesday 6th July 2022, 7:00pm
We start the Turner Sims Summer Nights series with a bang! In a year where we have seen the city come together to celebrate our cultural offer, it is a complete delight to invite you to an evening packed full of music and artists from across Southampton.
Pack your picnic and join us from 6.30pm!
From 6.30pm Bring your picnic and blanket and join us in the stunning gardens at Highfield Campus outside Turner Sims. The foyer and bar will be open with its usual range of beers and wine, or you could try our Summer Nights cocktail or treat yourself to a delicious organic ice cream.
7pm – 7.45pm in the foyer: A Formal Horse
The quirky Southampton-based prog band go acoustic trio (vocals, guitar and bass) this evening, filling the foyer and gardens with music from their latest EP, Meat Mallet. Following the success of their independent album Here Comes a Man from the Council with a Flamethrower, the band returned to the studio with veteran producer Rob Aubrey (Big Big Train, IQ) for the anticipated follow-up, all co-written by the band remotely in 2020, which reached number 43 in the Official Album Downloads Chart during the week of its release.
8pm – 8.45pm in the auditorium: Jack Francis
Southampton singer-songwriter Jack Francis is joined by his band to perform music from his beautiful debut album. His heartfelt songs are rooted in the finest musical traditions of America, while staying true to his own British and Irish heritage. Jack’s unique blend of folk, country, pop and Americana has been championed by the likes of Janice Long, Tom Robinson, Ricky Ross, Iain Anderson and Eve Blair across the BBC.
This whole album should be declared an area of outstanding natural beauty. Louder Than War
8.45 – 9.05pm Interval
9.05pm – 9.50pm in the auditorium: Chateau Bateau Band
It’s a home town hoedown with the irresistible seven-piece Chateau Bateau Band! Toe tappin’ tunes of love, loss, revenge and railroads from Southampton’s top notch Country music songsters. This much loved local outfit weaves together tunes from across the canon of American country music, from traditional Appalachian ditties to deep cuts from Country, and sometimes Western, legends.
If you especially love John Prine, Nanci Griffith, Gillian Welch, and The Roches – you’re in for a great time!
9.50pm – 10.50pm in the foyer: Mark James, Soul 45 DJ
Finish the night dancing in the foyer as SOUL 45 DJ, Mark James spins his incredible collection of forgotten and rediscovered Jazz, Soul, Funk, Reggae and Disco as well as stone cold classics you know and love. It’s an intimate dance party, driven by the warmth and richness of the 45 r.p.m. record – a complete custom-tailored night of music that doesn’t sound like anything else in the city.
