Awarding Gap Project Careers Event for Black Heritage Students
Wednesday 20th November 2024, 3:00pm
As part of Careers, Employability and Student Enterprise's Autumn Careers Fairs and Events programme for 2024, the Awarding Gap Project are hosting a careers event specifically for our community of Black and Black heritage students.
Students can connect with employers that have a proven desire to nurture Black talent, and an established culture of Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity, in a safe and supportive space. This event is open to ALL UoS students of Black heritage. Employers, speakers and contributors have been selected on the basis that representation is important to cultivate open and honest communication.
You do not need to be able to attend ALL THREE session to book for this event. This event comprises three one-hour sessions and booking allows you to attend ALL THREE sessions. However, students are also welcome to attend ANY ONE individual session as their timetable allows.
3-4pm: Employer Panel; representatives from organisations including Deloitte and EY join us for a discussion about what they’re looking for in potential candidates, how to navigate the application process and what the workplace culture looks like at their organisation. This will be followed by an opportunity to network and talk about roles and opportunities over light refreshments.
4-5pm: An Insight into Internships; join Veronica Gordon (Founder, OurVersion Media), Ngozi Chinye (Director, Soter Safety Consulting) and representatives from the Careers team, as well as recent UoS interns, for an informal conversation about what employers look for in an intern, how an internship could enhance your future career and what it’s like to take part in an internship as a student.
5-6pm: Demystifying PhDs; talk to Postgraduate Researchers from the University’s Black Futures Scholarship Scheme during this networking hour and ask questions about what it’s like to undertake a PhD, how to apply, and what opportunities this could open up for you. Again, light refreshments will be available to enjoy while you chat.
