Women are the majority of voters, and steps to address inequality are popular with the electorate. Transforming our economy is not just essential to tackling many of the major challenges we face today, from low growth to labour shortages, but it's also a vote winner. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic we were promised that this was a moment to build back better - but so far there is little sign that we're anywhere close to achieving that, least of all for women. Women were hit hardest by the pandemic and lockdown and today are bearing the brunt of the cost-of-living crisis and low wages. Despite significant progress, women remain systematically disadvantaged in our economy - sharpest of all for women of colour, disabled women and lone parents. The next election will belong to candidates who put women's economic equality at the heart of their policy platform.Jemima is a social policy expert with 15 years' experience working on issues around social justice and women's rights. Her career has spanned national charities, local government and a think tank, working to tackle inequalities and improve life chances. She was previously Head of Policy and Insight at the Fawcett Society, leading projects such as Sex and Power, Strategies for Success and work on Gender Pay Gap reporting. She has also held roles at Agenda, the London Borough of Newham, and the Fabian Society, and has led campaigns on supporting survivors of abuse, gendered responses to women's mental health and the connections between violence against women and girls and contact with the criminal justice system.The <a href="https://www.fawcettsociety.org.uk/">Fawcett Society</a> is the UK's leading membership charity campaigning for gender equality and women's rights at work, at home and in public life. The Stefan Cross Centre for Women was launched in 2018 with a generous donation from Southampton Law School alumnus, Mr Stefan Cross KC. The resulting futuristic sound takes you on a journey quite unlike anything you’ve experienced before. They often draw upon the retro-futurist nostalgia of 1960s and 1970s counterculture and science fiction. Their 2019 album Mirror People was a reimagining of traditional English music in a post-industrial age. In their latest album The Silent Star, the world has come to an end, its echoes drifting through outer space. 8.45 – 9.15pm in the foyer: Albert de Lyon Interval Walkabout During the interval, make sure you bump into golden grandee Albert de Lyon. Under the exclusive management of entertainer Guy Heathcote, Albert is one of Hampshire’s most distinguished and decorated big cats. When not combing his mane, polishing his crown or napping under the nearest tree, you may catch him playing paw-tapping tunes on his trusty squeezebox, ‘Samba’. Alternatively, he might be in the mood to share one of his many dexterous party tricks, which are sure to earn a roar of approval. They will also discuss the importance of refugee rights and the need for more inclusive policies to address the global refugee crisis.They will be joined by Barrister Dr S. Chelvan who specialises in the claims of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or intersex (LGBTI) asylum seekers fleeing homophobic or transphobic persecution. Chelvan will provide insight into the legal issues facing refugees and asylum seekers, his experiences and successes, and why he has chosen to specialise in this area of law. He has established a worldwide reputation as one of the most trusted and influential broadcasters of his generation. The Radio Times called him ‘…one of the greats of British contemporary music broadcasting’, and ‘a national treasure’ by The Mail on Sunday.For the past 20 years, Colin Hall has been the custodian at John Lennon’s childhood home, ‘Mendips’. He has guided the likes of Bob Dylan, Yoko Ono and James Taylor around the property. He’s written two books on The Fab Four and presented a BBC Radio 4 documentary with Alexei Sayle titled The Lennon Visitors. Colin was – incredibly – in the audience at the Village Fete where John was first introduced to Paul..!Colin and Bob have worked on several projects together before.
